Take Vista and stick it. I’ll stick with XP
Networking 7 new laptops at Jo’s work, 6 have the Home Basic and one with Premium. The premium wouldn’t see the router, the network, any of the other computers, printers etc. I fought with finding the tools that are easy to find in XP only to eventually “hard write” the addresses of the shared components.
